Ohio County, Ky

Help Support CattleToday:

Aunt says Old Hickory is where the locals eat. Moonlite is for the tourists lol.

I'll second the mutton. Love it!
Yes, my aunt and uncle lived in Owensboro, and when they brought barbeque up when they visited us or if we took some back home when we were there we would always go to Old Hickory, but we would usually eat dinner there at Moonlite. In more recent times though we ate there at old Hickory more.

I've killed sheep and taken to old hickory for them to make mutton I think the charged me $15 to do a small ram that wouldn't grow. I've taken deer there also.

Not far from me. "Meth-enburg' County is between here and there.
As others have already said... there's not much there. It is RURAL. However, I don't know a single negative thing about the place.
I couldn't tell you a thing about Beaver Dam or Hartford... all I've ever seen is what you can see from the Western KY Parkway. I've known (and went to vet school with) vets there... but I think they've both either retired & sold out, or have stopped doing any large animal work.
They could pick worse places to live!

It may be 'OHIO' County... but it's not what I'd call close to the Ohio River. I'd hazard a guess they'll have to drive an hour or more in any direction from there to find a casino... and it might not be on the Ohio River.

Thank you, yes it seems to be an hour from anything big but that's probably a good thing. They were looking at a house a couple of hours ago. An hour is a short trip for them considering where they are now.

I bet you either love or hate John prine.

I travel I-64 coming from St Louis to Louisville. How far south is Owensboro?
The next time you come thru there, do yourself a favor and stop by Whittaker's Guns just west of Owensboro. It's been 5 years since I've been in there, but it was a pretty impressive store at the time.

Went through Saturday. Don't trust the gps at Hartford. There's new construction for I 165 access ramps there and it'll take you the wrong way lol. Ate old hickory bbq. Very good. Ohio county is very uneventful. That's a good thing in my opinion.

They spent a little time looking around and decided they didn't like it and went north for a night at the Casino. Oh well thanks to everyone who responded.
Update, she has now been offered a job in Graves Co (Maysville) . She worked there during the tornado last year is why.these job offers are coming up. Must have done a good job. They are going to check that county.out next.

County seat of. Graves County is Mayfield. Maysville is in Mason County which is north eastern KY, just across the river from Ripley, Ohio.
Not trying to be persnickety, just clarifying, as I know some of the names of counties and cities can be similar.

You are totally correct. Graves county/Mayfield is what I meant.

It looks like it's not too far from Owensboro Ky. I don't know anything about Ohio County in particular, other than seeing the county line sign passing through when we would go to Owensboro to visit family. Owensboro is a fairly big city and has a lot of restaurants. We always liked to eat at a barbecue place while there, as the area is famous for them and in particular it's barbecue mutton, but they serve beef, pork and chicken too. Old Hickory Barbecue is in my opinion the best barbecue there, followed by The Moonlite as a close second. Moonlite has a big buffet with lots of options and is pretty good.
I installed a modern vacuum tube tester there back in 2006. I remember this buffet place kind of looked like a log cabin and it was incredible. Is this one of the places you're referring to? My memory of that trip is really fuzzy so may be wrong about what it looked like but it was a barbecue buffet.

Actually I'm lost if I'm west of I-75 in KY except for the area near Somerset. Eastern KY I know pretty well.
I'm pretty familiar with most of the state east of Lexington. Getting off on side roads in some of this area can be hairy when your gps goes out of range and none of the roads have signs left to mark them.
Going to west Ky I know the route to Owensboro and Bowling Green, outside of those direct routes I'm at at a loss.

I'd say we're talking about the same place.

I do like John Prine.
And, I first heard the natives call it 'Meth-enburg Co.' ... I didn't coin that phrase.

Mayfield... I drove there once, back around 1998, to pick up some 'Marion' lespedeza seed. Have some friends in veterinary practice there... but I couldn't tell you a thing about the place.
