Off the farm occupations

Help Support CattleToday:

I am a Kentucky State Police Detective and I teach part-time for Eastern Kentucky University. My wife is a registered nurse. We do the cow calf thing mostly, but when I retire in a couple of years I think we are going to get into growing a few vegetables for our local market.
This was a good post alot of good reads. Hope you all have a great day.

I am a site manager at an automotive plant. Basically what I do is I manage all the temporary employees until they are hired in fulltime. I work for a staffing service-we contract with a company to supply all of their labor. I manage the employees in all aspects-I hire, fire, do their payroll etc. Today I have 256 employees spread out over three shifts.
Some days I feel like I've babysat all day so it's a great relief to get home and head out to the pasture. Even if I have to work hard at home with the cattle it's a great stress releiver.

I'm an Emergency Department/ICU RN. My husband runs heavy equipment for the county.

Retired; but, still working. Previous work as behavioral psychologist, college teacher, owner of (& full-time worker in) landscape & irrigation business, and building contractor. Diverse, yes; however, several career changes.

Presently living off of income from real estate, social security, and some income from our cattle & horse operation. Work full-time with our livestock and related chores, including office work. Wife works full-time at our place and is our "roadrunner" for attending shows, sales, hauling livestock, vaccinating livestock, functions as our "expert" in breeding and pedigree decisions, and general livestock wrangler.

No kids at home to help us... :) however, no kids at home to bug us and cost us money...lol. They've got their own lives in other States.

Logistical Specialist for group which grows, markets and processes citrus from around the world. Mainly from Florida, but also from South Africa and since the hurricanes most likely from Texas. Texas grapefruit growers are smiling these days.

Texas grapefruit growers are smiling these days.

Yes your right they may be smiling but we wouldn't wish a hurricane on anybody. Could have been Texas crops ruined just as easily.

True, but a complete loss of Texas citrus could have been absorbed by Florida without blinking an eye. California citrus not much of a competitor to Florida, as fresh oranges are their mainstay. The good ole' "Texas Rio Star" is this years big kid on the block.

Dun-
Did you have any off the farm occupations while youve ranched?

Many. Military, owned a gun shop, DHIA technician, Data communication technician, programmer, AI business, wokred at a couple of dairys, day labor on farms, project manager for the Army and Navy, even worked at walmart before OHS, and I'm sure some real short term deals that I've forgotten. The kind of jobs that you get when you need to make ends meet that are just temporary. That doesn;t include just helping around dairys, larger ranches/farms and bull studs that I did just for the experience/knowledge.
Just way to diversivide.
