was reading about the Texas legislatur making it illegal to watch /attend cockfights---Made a comment along the lines of I thought it was a good idea--got an email from someone telling me to keep my mouth shut about things I didn't know about! Didn't think, deleted it--now I think I should have reported it--however,I cannot find the site I was on.. Should I be worried?? I don't think so,but there are a lot of nutts in this world.. what do you think?

Ignore it. I didn't think that cock fighting was legal here anymore anyway... It seems to change yearly. There were a lot of folks around here who had fighting roosters, but I don't see as many as I did before. Most of the folks that are into that are pretty shady characters anyway. I did know a woman, though, who went to Texas Tech on money her dad made off of cock fighting. It used to be legal in Louisana and Oklahoma but I don't know if it still is or not. Not something I keep up with.

In the late 80,s they were still having the cock fights just north of the red river in OK.North of Wichita Falls tx.In a big barn, then it became a bar and now two big casino's are there.
I have never had a notion to see cock fights or dog fights.I'm not saying that I don't mind seeing two animals in the wild fighting, but to make them fight when otherwise they probably wouldn't just seems to cruel to me.

Like Lammie , I think there is less of that kind of thing here too . Peg I don't think I would worry about it, I'm sure you didn't give your name and address . Most of the folks I knew trhat fought chickens were lucky to have electricity, let alone a computer, besides those folks have all graduated to meth labs .

I wouldn't worry about it. Some people get their panties in a wad when you don't agree with them. Happens to me here sometimes. Take it for what its worth and forget about it.

I have had that happen to me twice. Didn't get hit or anything, just passed one fellow in Acton and he followed me all the way to Granbury, I mean, close, shaking fist, passed me then slowed down. I guess he shouldn't have let me see his plates cause I sure called the cops on him. Middle aged guy, nice car, woman inside... Not the sort of person you picture doing the road rage thing.

Last summer I was taking stuff to Amarillo and passed a van on I-35. Woman went balistic. She harrassed me for several miles, pulling out in front of me, getting beside me and yelling and screaming, then got in front of me again and slammed on her breaks in the middle of the freeway! Again, law enforcement was utilized. I didn't pass in an unsafe manner or anything. It was wild. I had my son with me. And I think she was driving a group home van!!! Some people just didn't get whipped often enough as children. Or too much... This woman was just out of control.

If memory serves Louisiana was the last state in which it was legal. But the do gooders finally got it outlawed.

I'm sure some of the people were shady-like in the horse racing crowd. But there were some very prominent high rollers from Louisiana and Texas that loved those fights.
An attorney friend of mine used to go all the time and I would get the scuttlebut from him.
I have never been. But I considered going to take the other side of the bets my friend made. He always lost.

Several people who know a lot more about it than me have told me that the fight is just in those birds. You don't have to make them fight. Although I think they sometimes handle them to get them all worked up before the fight. Sort of like getting marine recruits worked up before they fight with those pugil sticks.
Breeders have to be careful to keep them seperated or they will start fighting and kill each other.

I'm sure that is an accurate desription of some of them. But I have electricity and a computer and I can't even dream of the kind of money some of those people have.

I have the impression that some of the dog fighting bunch fit your description. But I don't really know.

it is still big business in parts of Virginia, Kentucky, and West Virginia. It is not legal in Virginia to fight them but is legal to raise them. Not sure about the other states. A friend recently sold 80 at $100 each. When he goes to the fights he takes $10,000 to wager with.

We saw tons of ops in Alabama, there were hundreds of little cages each with a cock chained to it..We were told the same thing that it is legal to raise them but illegal to fight them...

For a good fighter. One trained and conditioned, $800 a bird is not uncommon.

As bad as the economy is there is still electricity in Louisiana. I just hope the rest of the country is as resiliant as LA.

If I want to see roosters fighting, all I have to do is look in the barnyard. Roosters going at it all the time. And it is their nature, but it isn't natural to strap razors on their spurs...

There's cock fighting around here. It's just secretive because it isn't legal. I know of a trailer house. Looks like people live there. But inside, it's a big pit and they do cock fighting in there. If I know about it, I figure everyone else does, too.

It's tied up in the drug trade here. Lots of Mexican Mafia types. I wouldn't go even if I were curious about it because there are some very rough customers. The woman I knew who went to college on cock fighing proceeds? Her dad got out of it for that very reason. And he had some impressive facilities, not just a lot of roosters with little shelters tied by one leg. He had a special blend of food for them, he had runs with concrete floors, a training ring that was indoors. He spent a lot of time and money at it. He had a regular job at Miller Brewery.
