Why doesn't beef, chicken, pork, etc have nutritional info on the packages in the grocery store? I recently was told by the doc that I need to start watching my cholesterol intake (runs in the family). Anyways, trying to make good decisions. I noticed that Turkey breasts, etc. often have their nutritional values listed on them. Why is this different? I understand that not all cuts of meat are going to be exact but couldn't they say a eye of round or sirloin with a certain grade can be expected to have x number of fat g or cholesterol mg. The doc gave me specific numbers to try to follow for a certain period of time where I will be retested. I would like to avoid taking pills if I can correct this with diet but I refuse to eat only turkey the rest of my life. I have been trying to select leaner cuts but I want numbers.

On a side note, wouldn't this also improve the value of select grades if more people were aware of the nutritional differences between the different grades? My wife says be thankful they're not there or people would be inclined to eat even less beef.

Not positive but I believe the reason is that most turkey breasts are processed in some manner and when the meat is processed the law requires that you put this type information on the package. (most turkey breasts are injected and many of them are kinda like spam)

BTW - if you are really watching your intakes a convenient rule of thumb on your meat is its ok as long as its no bigger than a deck of cards.

Yep, Jo is right. That turkey breast was processed is why it has the nutrition info. It was chopped or ground, cured, then cooked sliced and packaged. It is factory food. Look at the label again, it probably has ingredients you can't pronounce. If you stick to lean cuts and small portions, you are probably better off eating fresh beef than that turkey breast with all its sodium and probably nitrates. I think the brisket (flat), tenderloin and round are the leanest cuts. Some grocery chains have a nutritionist on staff in the store and if you give them your doctor's recommendations they could help you come up with an eating plan.

Just to high jack for a second, did you see the show "How its Made" when they showed how they processed turkey breasts? It was amazing. Also, the university of Georgia has come up with a way to change dark chicken meat to white meat. Don't know if this is in practice yet but there could be a lot of changes in our food if implemented.

Saw it, still doesn;t make me think turkey is anything to eat.

Dun, ya'll just grow em too big. Yep, I remember that 200 lb turkey you took the picture of after you made your wife tote it to the house.

did your doc mention co q 10 or l-caratine to help lower cholesterol, & staying away from anything with hydrogenated oils & msg. grass fed beef will have less cholesterol also

CoQ10 is mostly for your heart. L-carnitine is mostly for mental nourishment. Low flush niacin,or lecithin for cholestrol control. Some alternative drs. say it does'nt matter if you eat cholesterol as your liver will produce it anyway.

your liver does produce cholesterol and that may be what I am up against (not saying I am the picture of health either). I'm overweight and I smoke which can also be factors. I knew to avoid Hydrogenated oils like in Peanut Butter (which I hardly ever eat anyway, so no loss there) already. I thought MSG was mainly a heart thing.

I told the Dr. that I don't eat that many fried foods because at work (I'm a teacher) they don't fry ANYTHING. He said school food in many ways is worse than fried foods.

I have read on the internet that vinegar and citrus are also supposed to help. My triglycerides are whats really high. I am selecting eye of round mostly for my beef consumption because it is leaner as a rule. Of course the doctor says to eat fish, but I hate fish. Went ahead and bought some and going to try and make it swim in lemon hold my nose and swallow it down anyway.

I hate using a scale because it fluctuates and really doesn't give an accurate picture, especially the first couple of weeks you diet because of water weight, etc.

Well good luck with it. Exercise can help a lot, try to pick up a walking routine. Just try to stay away from processed foods, which the school lunches are probably full of.

co q 10 helps congestive heart failure, high blood pressure, regression of plaque, lowers cholesterol & helps control blood glucose. l-carnitine converts fat to sugar for energy, helps with heart attack & irregular beat, & also lowers cholesterol. this is from dr. richard becker & his wife's show on direct tv at noon & 1:00 weekdays. he survived cancer with chemo & natural methods & has made a study of all the naturals
