I have a question is it normal for a nursing cow allow another calf nurse? The reason is I walk to the pasture and we have 3 cows with calves and I notice that two of the calves was nursing on the same cow. Will this hurt the calf that came to dinner?

I get it a lot in my heifers where a couple of calves will share their mothers but it seems to even out between the cows and the calves. I put it down to the heifers being brought up and calve in a small tight group and they don't worry about their mates calf sharing with theirs.

I had one cow that wouldn't let another calf nurse until after her calf was around a month old but after that she was a virtual buffet, any calf was allowed to nurse. Calves will quite often try to latch on to the nearest teat - it's more convenient than looking for their mama.
