The states with the best chance of viewing the aurora include much of Alaska, as well as the northern portions of Montana, North Dakota and Minnesota. Other states that fall along the aurora's projected view line include parts of Washington, Idaho, Wisconsin and Michigan, according to the NOAA forecast (see below).

I agree when you are far enough north for them to fill the sky they are spectacular. But further south they are just a glimmer in the northern sky. For people who have never seen them it is something. But when you have seen the real thing many times it is hard to get excited about the possibility of seeing a glimmer.
