My heifer had a bull calf yesterday morning. I'm the afternoon I put mom and calf in with the rest of the herd but had to separate them again. My 3 month old bull calf and 9 month old heifer calf both tried to mount him and knocked him down. I was afraid he was going to get injured. Is that normal dominance behavior? How long should I keep him separated?

That's normal. I don't separate from the group, unless someone is actually beating up the new calf, or the mother won't accept it. Otherwise, I leave everyone together. They work it out. Its not unusual behavior, for the older ones to "pick on" the newer ones.

I would leave them apart for 2-3 days, when new calf is more alert. have seen the 9 month old one step on new one hard enough to kill them
