Does anyone do this? Where do you market?

The NHTC program is a USDA approved, non-biased, third-party audit that verifies the source, age and non-hormone treated status of your calves. This program is perfect for those producers already practicing non-hormone or natural procedures and want to see the benefit of those practices realized at sale time. When your cattle are NHTC verified, not only can you market them as such, but they will also qualify for export to the European Union - again adding value at sale time. NHTC verification requires an on-site audit that must occur prior to the cattle being sold. NHTC cattle must be sold to an approved NHTC location. If the buyer is not NHTC approved, the cattle will lose their NHTC approval status.

Here in NE Iowa there is a buyer that likes them. 5-10 cents over normal cattle. Idk if thay pays without implants and what not but we advertise our feeders as no implants ever and we get 1 guy that will buy them no matter what they sell for

One of the female members on here participates in the NHTC, for the life of me I can't remember who it was. It could be TCRanch or Jeanne.

Judging by the response it appears there is little participation by CTers

Yeah, sorry, I don't use hormones and finish all my feeder cattle, but I sell private treaty direct to consumers not through this program.

Do you sell mostly halves and wholes, or by the piece?

Mostly halves and quarters, some 1/8s. I'm located in MN and, unfortunately, selling by the piece is not as simple as in some other states due to MN Dept of Ag regulations (which really means there aren't many certified processors).

Selling by the piece is almost impossible here.

We used to sell all our home raised finished fats through the program. The last straw for me was when I had to sell a couple of loads to Tyson because Greater Omaha was booked full. Tyson required that we feed a probiotic that needed to be stored in the deep freezer. I said the heck with it after that. From what I have heard the Covid 19 pretty well shut things off going to Europe.

Depending on how many cattle you own superior livestock auction would be a good market for NHTC. I'm not a huge NHTC fan, I think often you give up too much performance. Cow-calf guys probably give up 20 pounds. Feedlots probably $100/hd advantage. You have to have a pretty good premium to cover that.
