Nice day

Help Support CattleToday:

Y'all are a lot tougher than me to handle that cold like that for so long. I'll take the heat and humidity any day. We're only a couple weeks into winter, and I'm already counting down the days til Spring. These temperature swings we've been having down here are tough on folks and cattle.

Have you looked at our forecast for the next two weeks?
I ordered heat tape, a heated hose and a tank warmer yesterday. I am getting too damn old to go chop ice every day when it is cold.

I don't mind the cold. We can dress for it. But, these swings are horrible on us and the cattle. Over a 60 degree swing in less than 4 days. Glad I don't have any newborns on the ground. Got some coming any day - if not tonight!
I want our NORMAL winters. Freeze up in November - ground stays frozen until March. We have 1-2 feet of topsoil. That means our cattle churn up the ground quickly and deep. Feet get stuck when you sink over ankle deep. Got stuck this am carrying 2 buckets - was losing my balance, so I put a bucket down in the mud and sat in it!!!

Yep. Not looking forward to the cold. Good you are planning ahead for that so you won't have to bust ice, and it refreeze right back shortly after. The positive I'm trying to find is as of right now at least it looks like it will hopefully be dry for a few days after Monday, so it could be worse. The days with temps in the 30s and rain/sleet and wind are miserable.

You must have just done a hot and steamy one in that outside $hithouse Dave, steam is coming from the vent pipe.
Doesn't seem like a lot of stockpiled firewood there, do you cut it as you go in winter? I imagine you would be too busy over summer to get much done.

Ken
That's not a $hithouse 😅😂 That's an outdoor wood furnace. You can heat a whole house with them.

It was 29 with an inch and half of new snow this morning. Now it warmed up to 37 and the snow is all gone. Just started rain snow mixed with the snow melting as soon as it hit the ground. I looked at the weather radar. It is either rain or snow clear to the coast and it is all headed this way. It is suppose to arrive as rain here tonight. It is going to be a sloppy mess to feed in tomorrow morning.

It got warm last weekend at 35 degrees and ¾" of rain fell. It knocked the snow way down, but the lake is currently rebuilding the snowpack and its only 14. NWS says maybe around a foot by tomorrow, some other meteorologists say we could get 2-3 feet. To me the air doesn't feel right to get much more than 6".

Not sure what this frozen ground is go folks talk about. Lol

Wood shed is full and there is still most of a truck load of logs left from last year. Grandsons and I cut some a couple days ago, maybe we can do some more before I take them home on Saturday.

Youngest grandson helped my this afternoon. We moved the heifer feed row to allow them access to 60 acres of scrub pine for shelter now that they don't seem to be getting sick any more. Panels were froze in quite well. Oscar was along to entertain us.

Grandsons are good for that only trouble is mine doesn't visit much these days he is too busy with his sailing, regattas down south at the moment then they go over to Europe for regattas there towards the middle of the year.
