Interesting. A friend just brought home a very nice, deep-bodied Tuli cow who was, IIRC, 14yrs old. He's been in cattle his whole life -- he told me that she's one of the nicest cows he's ever seen. I've seen other Tuli's who weren't anything to write home about...
I would suspect that in these "unimproved' breeds (like Tuli, Senepol, etc.) are a great source for heterosis ... but ... you have to be careful about the specific animals chosen. Otherwise, the perception of "reinventing the wheel" (vs. other breeds with similar traits) may be being overly generous.
