I saw an ad in the San Antonio paper for a guy selling 10 calves for 35 bucks a piece... I was wondering why someone would do that and is or isn't it profitable to buy those claves and fatten them up and sell them again. surely you would get more than 350 dollars for the ten of them..

What type of calves? if they're dairy bull calves that would explain the price. In my area they're going from free to $50/hd. I think the decrease in calf prices is related to the high cost of milk replacer and high cost of grain -- raising them is a losing proposition.

thats what I though too, the ad didn't say, but I don't know of anyone producing a lot of dairy calves around San Antonio, I guess its possible though. I wouldn't have the time to fool with them anyway I was just curious.
