We live on ten acres and have just bought 2 jerseys with there first calves. We are selling the calves and are going to buy some beef calves for them to nurse. What is the best type of beef calves to buy and should we get bulls or heifers. If we get bulls is it best to steer them. Can anyone steer them with the band or is a vet needed. we are planning on keeping the beef calves fo 12 months than selling at the local sales. thank-you

Just my 2 cents - in our area black or black baldies sell higher, but in other areas others will sell higher. Check around with other cattle people in your area to see what they sell. You can band the calves yourself and it is relatively easy with a little practice. You will need to put them in a squeeze shoot and head gate to keep them still. Good luck!

I agree with Brian. The Murray Greys would be a good choice no matter what area you are in.
