New to Branding

Help Support CattleToday:

I'm in Texas moving to Oklahoma.
I read it's not required but my friend who raises beef masters told me if your cows are stolen it's the only way to identify them. Aldo if you decide to sell them it's a sign of ownership.

I found some posts on branding but it seemed like a group thing.

I know the why brand but I don't know how to brand.

I know that I need a design that isn't being used. I know I have to get it approved by my county. But I don't know where to get the brand made, what to look for or the how to.

I only have 2 heifers. One to breed for milk the other to breed for meat.

They are around 2 years old about 1400 pounds.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you.
I don't know how to start a new post but if anyone is looking for a like new long horn chute and set of pens, there's a good set at Lawler Auctions in Bossier City in an online auction along with a few long horn cattle that will be sold in a couple of days, you can look online now

Could you direct me on how to find where I would do this.
And kindness goes a lot further than snide remarks.
This would make anyone who was looking for help not to come here.
Thank you in advance.

Thanks Brute... I think we should make you the official explainer for this. Well done.

And the job comes with perks. I'm still working on what those perks will be, so get back to me in a coupla years and I'll give you the list.

If they
I wouldn't brand them in Texas with a Texas registered brand and then move to Oklahoma. That could run you into all kinds of paperwork if you go to sell one of them.
If they registered a brand in Texas, then moved to Oklahoma, I would be concerned the brand may already be registered in Oklahoma.

There is that. The brand I had in Washington is registered here in Oregon by a guy over by Albany. I know that there is a big old time ranch north of Roundup Montana that has that same brand. I sold a load of bred heifers on Superior. They went to Nebraska. Word came back that those heifers must have originated from a ranch just north of him that has that same brand. No they all came from Washington. I just have the same brand as the guy north of you. At the very least you would need brand release paper work from someone in Texas. How easy and expensive is that? Here you can schedule a brand inspector to come out. The cost per animal isn't much but they also charge mileage.

Was going to what on that, thank you for the advice.

Ww would have been there already but we had a huge hail storm, they say it was from 2 tornados, so we're in the process of fixing thousands of dollars worth of windows, roofs, cars, and cleaning up all kinds of broken trees.

We're lucky though. Some people don't even have roofs over their heads from these storms.

Thank you. That was extremely helpful.
I filled in location and will put more details in as soon as I have time to sit down.

1) decide what you want for a brand. As has been suggested make it simple (keeps from blotching).
2) Go to the County Clerks office and register the brand. You will have to see if it is being used. Then select location to place. You may have to change locations (change hip, leg or shoulder), Avoid rib brands as they devalue the hide too much.
3. Once your brand is recorded, find a blacksmith or machine shop and have it made or order one from one of the companies mentioned earlier. If you operate in another county in Texas, you will have t record the brand with that county clerk. I am not familiar with Oklahoma laws.

When branding an animal, have the secured in a squeeze chute. Heat the iron as others have mentioned. Hold the iron on the animal rocking it up and down. I usually count to 3 when I hear it sizzle like bacon frying. Fresh brand should look like new shoe sole.

Don't worry about rib brands. Hides are worth so little that small packing plants just toss them. A rib brand wont devalue something that is nearly worthless.
Rib brands can be big and easy to read. Everybody knows it's your critter. And hides are worth maybe $10 or have negative value these days.
