I am considering renovating a run down stand with some legume plus grass seed this fall rather than next spring. That means planting in August rather than in April for Minnesota.

What has been your success with fall seeding in the midwest? It seems like I can still get most of a crop before working it up, and spread out my field work in the process...

Fall seedings I found have less weed competition because I can fallow the field and the annuals die off from the frost and the seedlings turn out ok if we get enough moisture, but spring is a better bet for you to get moisture. I have seen more fall seedings fail becuase of lack of moisture and sprouting too late before frost.

We have had far better results with fall seeding of clover, and others in fall than spring. No till is the way to go.
