New generation "farmers"

So I really figure these new generation farmers, small operations growing medicinal grass, would be slowing down.
Seems people are buying any little spot of land they can find to grow their product. I just cant help but wonder when the demand falls below the supply. I mean surely the market is flooded with that stuff. Everybody and their dog seems to be a farmer now.

Is it really that good of an operation?
Is anybody hip to all that jive?
What's really going on?

I really dont have any interest in it, other than I dont want it around here. I guess every farmer needs a place but still...

The reason is this. 2 places for sale near me. Both about 8 acres each. Both have barns and livable dwellings. Well, septic, electric already established. I dont like the idea at all
 
Some guys I know have been to some informational meetings about growing cannabis. From what they say it's a huge $/acre investment, and has to be intensely managed. Not to mention all the red tape.
There are some neat you tube videos of the new JD cannabis combine harvesting in Germany. It looks like they crossed a combine with a self propelled forage harvester.

The only real way to keep them out is to own the neighborhood.
 
I figure if it happens itll be an indoor facility.
Most around here I have seen are. Most of them are also regularly broken into as well.

I hate to wish ill on anyone, but that's exactly what I hope happens @kenny thomas

I dont want it around here any more than anyone else does

We have a few hemp farms around. Some super nice, hand planted little "Christmas trees" type, hand harvested. Other one machine planted, mostly weeds, horrible. But, selling is supposed to be the problem. You are supposed to contract out before planting, but, when it is harvested, they say "oh, it has too much THC or not enough CBD" etc. I don't think they have their sh$t together yet. Also, all the hand harvesting has got to be costly. I do know a farmer that talked about re-designing a combine to be able to harvest the product.
CBD oils & products are good. So, someone has to provide the raw product.
Cannibis is not legal to grow in NY. Can they tell the difference between the two plants?

Yep-that's where the backup is-testing labs. Also, here in Texas, where hemp has been ok'd but cannabis is not, drought and heat can change THC concentration in the plants to convert legal hemp to illegal, non-sellable cannabis. It's not a slam dunk crop for sure. We lived in CO for a few years right after legalization happened (poor timing). Rental houses were being destroyed by renters who were growing the "legal" number of plants, but would re-wire the houses to have capacity to carry heat lamps, and create mold problems from the high humidity rooms. The water requirements alone can really put a big load on local water supplies. Not an innocuous, "no one hurt" legal crop.

Yes. Field hemp is a taller and more aggressive plant. Think of it like the difference between field corn and sweet corn. Besides the visual difference, they can test for THC. There are maximum allowable levels for hemp.
 
Yes, but hemp farmers "may" plant cannibis within the fields. That is a popular thing to do in the corn fields! LOL Of course, hemp & cannibis may cross pollinate, so that might not work out to their advantage.
 
@Brute 23 agreed sir! I dont know these folks yet. My only hope is they are good folks trying to provide a needed service. Sometimes I'm a bit too optimistic... lol

Cannabis is legal in Oklahoma now. I'm sure that's their plan being indoors and all. Weather I agree with it being legal or not, is beside the point. I know there is good folks out there doing this kind of thing.

I dont think that "they" have it all figured out yet either. When law it actually passed, oklahoma was scrambling. They really didnt expect it to pass and had no idea what to do to regulate or anything else.
 
There was a TV special on what happened on the west coast after legalization. Surprise - - state governments are not seeing the benefits they projected. Most existing growers just keep going, and undercut the legal folks who have to pay a lot of fees and taxes.

I think it will be a bit like cattle industry. Some get big fast using MT warehouses and used greenhouses. Others work for free since it is a fun hobby with benefits.

Same thing with the lottery. Doesnt do any good to collect more taxes from poor people.

I've heard lots of debate on casinos also because of the addiction and crime that goes along with it.
 
I know that growing for sale requires permits in Washington State. I believe it does in Oregon too but not sure. Small back yard stuff is just for personal use. I have been told by a pot head who should know that Oregon put too much tax on it so the black market is still competing. He said Washington didn't over tax so the legal stuff is cheaper than the black market stuff. It is not legal in Idaho. As I have said here before there is a pot shop in Ontario, Oregon. That is right smack on the Idaho border. They built a big beautiful store. Then they added a drive up that looks like a drive up coffee stand. I have seen as many as 20 cars all with Idaho plates lined up at the drive up. Google Burnt River Cannabis. His farm sits right on top of where there use to be a railroad switch yard, round house, and repair shop. Who knows how many assorted chemicals were dumped on the ground there.
 
I got an email back in the spring telling me that if I contract with this group, I could get $12,000/ac in profits! If I pay for everything, and it's on my land.

I replied, that for $6000/ac they could rent all the ground they wanted from me, and get to keep that 12k for themselves.
Still haven't heard back.
