I love highlands. Found a standard bull, 4yr old, they had three of his calves on the ground. Thought it was a great deal to have a little fun with and start a small highland herd and some crosses. We'll see how it goes. Barely cost more than my should have been bottle beef babies. Wife made me swear on all that's good that I won't buy another until I sell one…….

Do anybody know of of a place close to Southern Illinois, Southern Indiana m, or maybe Western Kentucky that has highlander farm people can visit?

I'm picturing this bull in my mind... with a close shearing... and I'm wondering how accurate my mental image is to the reality.

And I'm going back to what I remember of your former experience. I think you said that you'd raised dairy calves on a bottle? (For profit or fun?)

And then that leads me to wondering if you have any ideas about what constitutes quality in cattle, or if you even have any care about that. You seem pretty cavalier about your choices. So I'll ask you the same thing I've asked before... is this ownership of cattle a hobby or being done as entertainment rather than to put meat on the table or money in the bank?

Because it's fine no matter what you're doing... but your questions and the answers you might find valuable may depend on what your goals and objectives are, so a little clarity may be in order.

This bull is for fun. Hobby and entertainment. He'll be an an entirely different area than my beef calves. I am cavalier at the moment. I will continue to learn and try to grow a beef herd as well.

The dairy bottle calves were as a child for fun and experience.

So you can say I have a mixture of goals at the moment.

The beef calves are to learn the beef side and gain experience to be able to make some profit (hopefully) doing something I enjoy.

This guy will be pasture art and probably bred to a few ladies

I know you stressed this is "for fun", but personally I think that Highland bull is a poor representation of the Highland breed.

This is coming from some who decided to experiment with Corrientes.
How did that go? I am still seeing spots.

Then I decided to experiment with Dexters. How did that go?
My cows got smaller.

Have fun 🙂

Where you at? We're not far apart apparently.

Where I am there is a ready market for ornamental type cattle to go beside the houses however I don't think your fellow will produce enough of the Highlander traits to be able to sell into that market, he does seem to have a bit of beef on him though.

Ken

I've seen bulls, minus the hair and horns, turned out with commercial herds around here that were not a whole lot better than him. They are usually small operations of ten or twelve cows who just wanted to get the cows bred.

Thanks for the reply! I'm curious what Highlander traits you see him lacking?

Thanks for the feedback. In your opinion why do you think he's a poor representation?
