Hi all,

We have had 2 beef cattle since April. We are new to cattle and are still learning. This morning at around 4:45am one of our heifers started bellowing consistently, about every minute or two. We thought something might be wrong so we went out early and checked on them. She seems fine. She is mobile, is wanting scratches, and ate when we put feed out. We live in sand and have been in draught conditions for many weeks and our pasture grasses are weak, so we supplement daily. We have a pretty set routine. They get hay and feed around 7am and 5pm. If we are running late it's not unusual for them to bellow a bit. However, this is continuous and started well before feeding time. It's been over 2.5 hours now and she's still going. We aren't entirely sure what to make of it. Is she in heat? Wouldn't she have been in heat before and why is she noisy this time? Something else? We aren't too worried at this point given she seems fine, mostly just trying to learn.

Most probably she is in heat, but hard to tell for sure. If it is heat, you should notice some additional signs. She may be more aggressive and pushy than usual. She may try to mount the other cow/heifer/animal. The other beef animal might try to mount her, which she may allow. If she calms back down by tomorrow, mark it on the calendar as a possible heat. In 19-21 days, watch for her to act a little off again.

She may have had a heat before and you just never realized it. They don't always bellow and carry on.

What are your plans for the beef cattle?

I asked some scientists, the consensus was most assuredly climate change.
