Don't beat yourself up, he's not thinking about them why should you? You can't fix stupid. He put you in a bad situation by letting you in on it. You did right. If right was the easy path then we wouldn't need laws. JMO

My job requires a tremendous amount of discretion. I have never betrayed my employers trust in me. Some people just can't be trusted with confidential information. Amazingly some people will approach you in a reatraunt and ask for it.
