feed (mostly hay and/or silage), water, shelter, and a good thick bed of straw.

Corn...maybe. most of the time they do just as good if you feed them silage-barley or corn silage.

When the temps get below ten degrees we add some cracked corn to the diet for the extra energy. Other than that just a couple of extra pounds of alfalfa when it is in the teens.
