I'm building a 48" toolbar to mount row hippers onto. My tractor is a 45 HP compact Kubota and the soil is heavy red clay below the fist couple of inches. The toolbar itself is 2.5 square tube with 1/8 inch walls.

I have 2 questions: Is the tube going to be strong enough? And, will 1/4 inch thick plate strips welded on end be strong enough to hold my hitch pins?

Thanks

IMO the 1/8 " walls wouldn't hurt to be heavier as better too much than not enough. The 1/4" might be okay, but 3/8" would be better. I would go look at one already built like you want and get some ideals of size needed.

Here is one to look at. It might be cheaper to buy than build.

Sky is right. Your weld will hold but the metal will not. It will tear away at the stress points. Its just a short piece so use 1/4". The end plates would probably be okay with the thicker main member.
