As calving and lambing is underway down here in NZ I thought I would post a few of our new calves of the season, for those that like calfpictures.
Our small herd of 30 cows started calving 3 weeks ago today, 17 down, 13 to go!
We lost the first calf, a backwards calf to a 2 year old. Only 59lbs, but he had his legs crossed and one bent at the hock, so didn't get to them quick enough :(

The cattle are outside all year round, and only get hay or silage during the winter, in addition to pasture. The snow gets close up in the hills near here, but rarely falls on the farm(once in 50 years!) but we do get frosts and about 40" of rain p.a.
Average weaning weight (bulls and heifers) 740lbs at 8 months (no creep feed!)

Very pleased with the calves to date, average birth weight 79lbs from dams aged 2 years to 13 years.

This old girl was born in July 2000 and this is her 12th calf.
Not sure why the photos all come out different sizes, but you get the idea.

Very, very nice calves. On the older cow.... Do you have plans to keep her much longer ?
Thanks

Thanks for the comments!
Sorry to say the old black cow will probably have to go once she rears this calf as we have some nice looking heifers coming along, and you can't keep them all for ever! She had mastitis a couple of years ago and though we cleared it up quickly with one treatment I think that quarter is now dry. She still managed to wean a 340kg bull calf at 228days last year.

Yes, this lot of calves are all by Everest, son of the Tasmanian bull Woodbourn Warrior B48. Everest has been used on his breeders yearlings before we bought him in partnership with another stud, so he now has 82 recorded calves, without the current crop now being born on two properties, so we have confidence in his EPD's.
His birthweight and calving ease figures are great and Milk figures very good indeed (+9 to a breed average of +3) He is a good match for our big framed high BW and low milk cows! Going to try a bit of line breeding this year and put a son over a few of his daughters!

He is now a 4 year old at the end of September (and weighed 1055kgs -is that about 2325lbs? )in paddock condition in March

Our first calves from him are now yearlings and shaping up to be nice animals.

We showed this heifer by Everest, photographed just this morning, as a calf before she was weaned, 3 shows x 3 first placings and not against MG's, up against the big girls! Straight off her mother to the show and home the same day :D

This was March 2013, when Honey, placed first in a class of 5 Simmentals, 2 Herefords, a Speckle Park and a South Devon!

Glad the photo turned out OK glacieridge :)

Couldn't resist posting this shot, could have been specially posed, nine shades of grey!
