I have a sweetcorn and half-runner bean patch on a ridge top above my house. It is the site of where a pioneer preacher, Randolph Hall, settled in the fall of 1796 and lived until his death in 1821. His widow lived on there until 1830 and the cabin was abandoned, all the children having moved on to Missouri.
This morning a found an old mule shoe there when tilling the corn. Over the years I have found parts of old iron kettles, fire dogs from the fireplace, and countless shards of pottery and tableware, all dating to before 1830.
When I find something like this, I think back to those who worked here before. I have owned this place for 52 of the 227 years since it was first settled on and farmed, nearly 1 out of every 4 years. I am becoming part of its history.
