Mow New Pasture?

Hello there.

I have a new pasture that I planted about 10 weeks ago and wonder if I should mow it. It has Fescue, Timothy, Orchardgrass, Ryegrass, Alfalfa and is about 6 - 10 inches tall. I plan to turn loose a few steers in about 6 weeks, when the new fence is ready. It's a bit weedy in spots and that's one of the reasons I'd like to mow. I'm located in NE Ohio if it matters.

Thanks, Andrew

Mowing the pasture to cut the weed tops and heads will prevent them from seeding out. Eventually; you will see a substantial decrease in the weed population if you continue light mowing. You should be very careful if you choose not to mow and use a herbicide instead for the weeds. A broadleaf type herbicide to kill weeds will most likely damage the alfalfa in your pasture stand. Be sure to choose the right product for herbicide control.
