Does laying down mine fields, using artillery, machine guns sound crazy to patrol the border ? Sure it does !
But to stop illegals from crossing the border. You need to look at it from an illegals point if view. What kind of wall etc..., would they not try to cross. What kind of wall would you not cross yourself ? You answer that question and you will have your answer as to what it will take to stop people from crossing the border.
Me personally, I wouldn't attempt to cross a mine field for no reason.
