I am looking for a friendly miniature cow or calf for my 4-H kids. I would prefer one with a splash of color and one that could withstand our cold mountain winters. A reasonable price is a must. We are in North Carolina. Pet quality will do. Thank you.

Have you considered a Dexter? They're not really "miniature" but they are fairly small. Most are black (some dun, some red), have horns (many breeders are now dehorning their calves), seem to do well in our climate (and we've had quite a winter so far!!!). They respond well to hands-on attention, are quick to learn (sometimes TOO quick!), and would be great for 4-H (check to see if your local program will include Dexters -- they can't compete with traditional large breeds weight-wise!). Check the Dexters out at www.dextercattle.org. There are breeders in NC (and Virginia, too! http://www.dextersfor.com) Gale in VA
