I spoke to my vet this week about putting out mineral with CTC for stockers this summer. I quizzed him about the safety for horses. He hadn't studied it and was hesitant to give me an answer. He thought it wouldn't be labeled for equine use but thought it would be ok. I'll have 2 to 4 horses with a dozen cows and 30 stockers. Anyone with experience know if there's any danger there? I don't see these cattle more than weekly sometimes and want to avoid anaplas.

He's the one that will be writing the prescription for this mineral before you can buy it. He better get "read up" on his drugs, usages, inclusion rates, warnings and dangers.

I don't disagree, he's just not a horse guy. He sends all horses somewhere else. Good cattle and small animal vet though. Just thought someone might know beyond what the feed store tells me.

Generally the concern with horses is ionophores but if the Vet can't give you an answer contact the dealer you'll be buying the mineral from or the company direct. My Purina dealer is always quick to get me an answer.

I'd talk with a vet that had a very large equine business. He will know.....we or anyone else telling you something would simply be something we're read or heard. As I said, he's the one that will be writing the script...that means he's subject to some liability perhaps....feed salesmen are not vets.

Not an equine specialist, but ordinarily, I'm unaware of anyone routinely recommending feeding CTC to horses; there is, and always will be, some concern about tetracyclines contributing to enterocolitis... but that may be a dose-dependent deal.
Ran across this blurb in a set of notes about equine nutrition from someone at Auburn Univ:
"Presently, the Food and Drug Administration allows the use of 85 mg chlortetracycline
per head daily for horses up to one year of age for stimulating growth and improving
feed efficiency (Jurgen, 2002)."
(take note of the 2002 date - may no longer be accurate; VFD certainly does not allow feeding for growth stimulation or feed efficiency in food animals any longer)

Excellent info, thanks! I considered putting in a call to my horse vet clinic but they don't tend to be good about calling back if I'm not coming in to spend money!
