Mineral Supplementation

What suggestions do you have for cows & calves out on pasture this summer (we have had it dry the past couple months). The calves didn't grow the best and the cows (granted, some aren't easy fleshing) are looking thinner. Thanks.

Well, if the calves are of age to be weaned, take them off their momma's. That will help start to get the cows back into condition. Then try to start to recondition them by feeding them on hay, grain, and maybe some kind of supplement. Start the calves on grain and hay or supplements too, if you want them putting on weight

Last year we had the same problem, we started using 14% supplement tubs. They will eat the first couple as if they're candy, then slow down to a more normal intake. If your pasture is pretty much dried up and has quit growing start with the hay now also. When grass gets shorter then about three inches, some as short as two inches the cows can't eat as efficiently. If it gets too short you will be stealing from next years growth by weakening the plants.

The previous responses are good. Wean calves at 3 months +, start feeding your cows. As far a a mineral supplement, they should be receiving loose, free-choice mineral all year long. You should be feeding a 2-1 phosphorus/calcium mixture. Jeanne
