Mating Red Devon Bulls to Limousin & Angus Heifers

Help Support CattleToday:

Do you mean South Devon? Or Devon? Both are red, but different breeds.

I am buying some South Devons this year to use both as to raise purebred and to add to my angus and simmentals. I do not anticipate any problems considering the EPD's of the bull I am buying and my cows.

I have a Simmental bull that I would not hesitate to use on first calf angus heifers.

The individual characteristics of the bull are the most important thing to watch for. I think that South Devon are going to add a lot to my herd.

I have never raised any South Devon's but from what I've heard they may be one of the best kept secrets in the US beef industry.

Apparently they marble like British cattle and yield like Continental, so from a carcass standpoint they would cross well with both Limousins and Angus. Some research has shown that South Devon carcasses are above average on tenderness, a trait that many breeds are now trying to improve on.

Because South Devon's do have the reputation for being bigger framed be careful not to select too large of breeding stock.
