CAN YOU TELL ME HOW THE MAINE BREED GOT STARTED? ALSO I AM TOLD A LARGE PERCENTAGE OF THE START CAME FROM THE SHORTHORN BREED. IS THIS TRUE? WHAT PERCENTAGE IS THE MAKE UP? ALSO HOW DID THE BLACK COLOR GET STARTED? THANKS!

Go to the home page here at Cattle Today. On the left side are links. Click on the "Breed" link and you'll find a brief history of the MA breed. The Maine Association registers percentage cattle so some Maines may have Shorthorn blood in them. The Shorthorn Assn also registers percentage cattle, so some Shorthorns may have Maine in them. Angus is the only beef cattle breed that is naturally black. That's where the black color came from for Maines, Simis, Limousine, Salers, etc.
