Madrone Shavings cow safe for bedding?

We are showing some cattle at the local fair and need to provide our own shavings for the stall areas.

Does anyone know if madrone shavings are toxic to cattle?

Pine costs $89
Cedar is $99
DF would cost me $75
Madrone would cost me $20

Just trying to keep the costs down but won't do it if its too risky.

I'm not familiar with this type of wood or wood shavings. Not much online about it that I could find. I'd stick with proven wood shavings myself. Better safe than sorry.

You're obviously located on the west coast. News to me that madrone/manzanita is manufactured as shavings.

I know its not toxic for people, couldnt find anything for certain about animals, probably because its pretty rare to find it in shavings. You might try contacting your local extension service, if its commonly available to you locally, they may have a good handle on its uses for livestock.

As an aside...can you get small pieces that cheap around there. Its a really fun wood to work with!

We are in Oregon. Its not manufactured as shavings but they do have it available as a biproduct of other manufacturing. It a medium (not super fine or coarse).

I looked online and couldnt find anything but that pine is toxic. Funny that the pine and fir needles are so toxic but they can use those for shavings :???: :???:
