Just noticed a softball sized lump on the side of a cows jaw. Haven't penned her yet to see if it was hard or soft. Seems to have come on pretty quick so I'm hoping this means it isn't lumpy jaw. I figured I'd treat her with LA200 and cross my fingers. What do yall think?

I have in the past penned and stuck a needle in it and drew back to check the color. Sounds to me like a sticker fester. In the cases I have a make a small cut at the bottom end and drain it. Give a shot of broad spectrum after. Never have done just a shot. Tell me later how it works. I really could do without the cutting.

I had one last year , got the vet he opened it on the bottom so it drain , stuck the water hose in and and washed it out good ,squirted betadine in and told me if it start healing in a day or so to wash it and treat it again but I didn't have to. after about a week or so you almost didn't see anything wrong anymore , that was with no antibiotic.

Sorry I messed that last message up and didn't see it untill I sent it, what I meant to say was that the vet told me if it didn't start healing in a day or so to wash it out again and treat it with betadine but it healing fine without me doing anything else, no antibiotic

I reckon she just got into something rough and cut her gums allowing an infection to set in. Just wanted to check with others. Now the fun task of parting her out and penning her solo. This is where a good horse earns his keep.

I had one of those summer before last on a Brahman cow.. right on the lower jaw bone. Took her to A & M and they did as Shorty suggested.. lanced it for drainage, cleaned it out well and administered broad based antibiotics.

She still as a very small hard lump, but it's not a big deal. I would be reluctant to "wield the blade" myself.. I feel more comfortable letting a vet do that.

I don't know if it is still warm enough in Florida for snakes to be out, but I've seen similar symptoms from snake bites. Treatment is the same as has already been mentioned - incision, drainage, and flush it out. Along with broad spectrum antibiotics. Might also consider a tetanus shot.

Same thought crossed my mind at one point.
