LonghornXBuffalo

He should breed a Longhorn bull to a buffalo cow. Everything that I've read about Bison hybrids suggests that alot of bovine cows bred to a buffalo bull will either lose the fetus around the five month mark or the cow will die. I think that the cow/buffalo bull mating results in the cow rejecting the fetus-the cow builds up alot of fluid and the fetus drowns. The bovine bull bred to the bison cow seems to do fine. I'm sure that this would be an interesting cross. I've never seen this cross but I did see a bison/Brown Swiss cross. It was a steer and it was huge. It actually looked alot like a Longhorn-it had pretty long horns. I raise Longhorns and I have some Beefalo/Longhorn crosses. They make huge cows but they don't look anthing like a buffalo.

A Very Old Thread but maybe these observations should be archived:

Have seen four beefalo from the same buffalo cow but with two different longhorn bulls

Each was different - the first two looked like cattle one had curly hair
The third developed the buffalo hump and short but curved buffalo horn

The fourth, now 6 months old looks like a buffalo except for white hair around his nose and straight upeard horn.

This suggests the cattle genes for the most part are
dominant and the buffalo recessive - the over all phenotypes have thus far followed the classic Mendelion ratio 3 :1

Interesting stuff. I know I'd like to see some pics of that cross. Please PM me with the pics if you don't want to post them up on the boards.

I'd have them look up beefalo, there's lots of info available on how they got the breeding to work out.

Just looked to me that the breeder had a pile of money to burn to stand the losses before any success.

Just for my 2 cents worth. I looked into beefalo hard at one point and found no real viable market for them other than as commercial cattle. So what's the point?

I suppose if you wanted to develop a market for the lean high protein meat you could come out selling quarters and halves.

What ever your freind decides to do, good luck to him.
