I went to the sale barn Friday night to see about buying a few bottle calves. I don't normally do that but we wanted more bottle calves now. Everything went high. I was just wondering what some of you pay for a bottle calf in your areas. Angus, jersey, holstine, herford, shorthorn, whatever you have in your area.

at the sales barns here good week old beef bulls are 175-230 heifers about 50 cheaper --angus and angus cross and charlois cross are bringing that. other breeds are cheaper according to quality and size of calf----not sure about the dairy breeds

Any where from 40 to 250. All depends on the health of the calve and breed some what. The ones that are really high in my area are the onesw just roping calve size. You cant touch them. I guesse the good whaether and rodeo season.

According to Navasota Livestock, 100-300 lb baby calves at the sale here yesterday brought 320.00-480.00. If you are not familiar with Navasota, they have sale prices for cattle all over the country. Might be helpful.

careful now, you might start a big fight by asking someone how much they pay for a calf in their area...

200-300 lbs in GA $149.00-201.00 so you can guesstimate what a calf less than 200 might bring.

I was just wondering. They went up to about double the price this week. It didn't matter what breed. Mostly dairy breeds. I went scouting dairy farms yesterday, I told them I would take all they had. One man has about 50 coming fresh next month. Another about 30. I used to get all I wanted from $40.00 to $100.00. Now the $40.00 jerseys are $125.00 if not more. I can't keep enough jerseys. People here want them for the freezer. They say its more tender??? I say $1.50 lb live weight and nobody fusses. Just can't get enough of them. I have 2 kids making good money with them. I may have to get into it myself.

Growing up we always fattened a Jersey or Jersey cross steer for the freezer. There's still alot of folks around here that do that. It's very good and tender.

Was at a sale this past Saturday, and less than 2 mo old calves went for $300! Couldnt believe it either. Seems like just weaned calves were getting around $500 bucks or so. Didnt seem to me like it was worth taken a chance on the bottle calves, but to each his own I guess.

Hey Beefy, I assume the price you mentioned is per hundred weight?

Yeah, I have had a couple people stop by asking about bottle babies and I show them this;
Feeder Steers and Bulls Medium and Large 1-2
Wt Range Avg Wt Price Range Avg Price
150-180 164 210.00-235.00 224.27
200-240 218 180.00-205.00 192.56
250-280 267 165.00-190.00 176.52
300-340 312 148.00-166.00 157.63

and they leave... :eek: One guy said he thought he could buy them $100 each. I told him if he found them to let me know.

This Saturday 6/4/05 I sold a 150 lb bull at the Navasota sale barn and he went for $1.75 lb = $262.50 total before deductions/commission. He was well built, solid black, just had a little problem that I didn't want to spend the $300 or so on surgery to make him right. I did do really good on a 6 weight crazy as the day is long heifer though. :lol:

The Friday sale here day old holstein bulls were $200 to $170. Very few for less than $150 and they were pretty sick looking. Jersey bulls were around $50. There was one good holstein heifer that sold for $450. A couple of free martin heifers went for around $130. There were two beef cross and one milking shorthorn bulls that brought around $200. Again all these are less than a week old.
