We bought 200 mix cows last fall and are in the thick of calving. With the snow and very cold temps last week, I noticed that the limousin cows bred to limousin bulls had rather weak calves, that is, compared to the english type calves that we had in the same time. Almost all of the limousin calves had to be put in the barn or at least helped up. All of the angus x and hereford calves were up getting their first meal within 15 to 20 minutes of being born. Is this characteristic of the limousin breed? All of the cows have an approximate bcs of 5-6. Thanks!!!

No this is not a characteristic of the breed. Our purebred limousin calves are using up and nursing as quick as our commercial cow's calves.

Not at all. The past two calving seasons we used a limousin bull. His offspring were born in January, big, up, and strong. Some of the biggest and best we've had.

Some people around here complain about limo's being slow to get up and nurse. A friend in Texas had some limo calves eaten by buzzards because they took so long to get up as well. So, maybe it's certain bloodlines, or a breed trait.

it is a charactaristics that can happen in any breed. you need to tag and mark down those calves and make sure you don't keep any for replacements. when we help to save a calf we need to send the weker calves to the feedlot and not breed the weaker trait into our herds records are important. because at weaning you may not remember which are the weaker ones. once they are up they can catch up in a hurry.

The bull was used on crossbreds and some just plain old mixed up cows. Our true crossbreds are Hereford X Simmental, and they have turned out to be some fine mothers.
