Light Calf Price ?

Help Support CattleToday:

Been about the same here last week they were a little higher but a little cheaper yesterday. I have bought 80 calves in the last four weeks that average 270 pounds and 1.81.

High steer 233lb. brought 2.30, high heifer 229lb. brought 2.01. About 400lbs is where the $ are around here, they brought 1.80.
The price has been going up the past 4 weeks.

Now this week 300lb steers are up to 2.05 and at 400 they are into the 1.80s. some nice 250lb weaned black steers brought 2.35.

I saw, on one of the 3 auctions I was watching, a group of 25, 400# blackies sell for $1.98. Wish I would of been the seller. :cry2: :(

Beans and corn have been going down. If you look in this months issue of Drovers cattle network they have a pie graph showing feedlot occupancy, in september they hit the low at 63.69%, and in oct. they raised back up to 65.8%. So they are starting to fill feedlots again, so that means more will start selling 700-800 stockers and start buy light weights again.
At least that's how I translate it, but I have a limited view.

Another thing to add is that feedlot margins are down to -$35.60 on 10/20 from -$198 in sept.

What is driving this market?
Lower feed cost's.Weather is starting to level with less change so there are more buyers for the small generally un weaned calves. And i think a pretty bright market ahead of us.

Seems like cow prices have come down here but calf prices have been up. They have been close to $2 all the way up to 400#. Caught a good sale last week and purchased 2 trailer loads averaging 311# for $1.86.

If they are good i know where you could sell them 2 loads for a profit of about 20$ a hundred. But that ain't nothing to what you going to make time they get to 800 or 850.I have slowed way down the last two weeks, every time the owner of the salebarn sets a calf in at about 1.85 this one loud mouth buyer bumps them to atleast 2.00.

In Florida- Do you think that healthy younger weaned calves around #250-#275 are a good buy at 1.20/lb? (all beef, no dairy or LH)
