Lepto vaccination

We vaccinated this weekend, and since the feed store was closed when I noticed we might not have enough, I suggested that we not vaccinate the steers. After everything was all over, my daughter did a search about Lepto on the web. All I knew Lepto did was protect the females from abortion. Now I find that abortion is the symptom of lepto... any bovine can get it. I tried to pacify myself with the fact that we didn't do any vaccinating last year and nothing went wrong with the herd, so maybe if we just catch the steers next fall or spring, we will be doing all right. Am I just avoiding the inevitable? Do I need to get those steers back through my chutes and vaccinate them with the lepto vaccine? *sigh* The only animals we have on the place are those born here or over at the folks'. What am I risking?

Since steers rarely get pregnant the chance of their aborting are rather slim, so we have never vaccinated steers for lepto.

Diddo on the steers. Lepto is greatly spread by DEER - so being born on your farm does not eliminate your chances of Lepto affecting your herd - unless you don't have deer or other wildlife that spreads it. But do not fret over not vaccinating your steers. Jeanne http://www.SimmeValley.com

Sound advise. I once had a client that insisted that some steers she bought should be depreciated as part of her breeding herd! And she never could understand that a heifer and a Hereford weren't the same thing

***** Makes sense to me ...

***** We have had deer roam across our acreage until we fenced it. We do have rabbits that nibble around the pastures, and we have raccoons, porcupines, even saw some bear track day before yesterday. oh, yeah, and don't forget the coyotes. I won't fret, but will get them done next year. Or is this the vaccine I give again in the fall? If it is, I will do the steers at that time, just to be safe. > Diddo on the steers. Lepto is

In our area, it is advised to vaccinate with Lepto 2 or 3 times a year. I never give it to steers (unless there's no price diff in the 4-way and 9-way vaccine). Jeanne http://www.SimmeValley.com

If you read the back of the bottle it says, "administer 2-6 weeks prior to breeding or adding to the breeding herd." Which would definitely leave out steers. at our feed store the shot is sold under reproduction.
