Leg Abcess

My heifer has an abcess the size of a grapefruit on her rear leg, just above her hock. The vet lanced the wound and it is freely draining. The vet didn't give any vaccines. Wondering if you agree with this. Should an antibotic be administered?

I would with a open cut.

I would hydro the leg and draining tract every day with cold water and keep it kleen, if the vet didn't feel it needed antibiotics there was a reason for it, antibiotics ARE NOT a vaccine. I am guessing this is a halter broke animal, bring her up and use water and a spray nozzle to wash the wound daily until you see the tract start to granulate in and heal over. you might also use Alushield as a topical wound spray after you have cleaned it.

If you do this, be careful not to let the wound heal on the outside befor the inside is healed or you will be back where you started. Just a though. Good Luck
