Interestingly, this is my first time learning about the whole breeding process of cows. I am kind of laughing at myself right now, I thought any time another cow[heifer] mounted or "covered" another cow, whether it be a Male or a Female, that it was stating Dominance. It turns out, that in reality/actuality, she is in heat/standing heat and it's an instinct.

So today, I'm watching our Dexters, we have three. Two Females, and One Male, were all doing the mounting thing, turns out both of our girls are in season, so we are hoping that our Bull will get the job done, though he is only 14 months, I've seen him try and cover our youngest[not really that young, a year and a half] Female already. I've also learned to write this day down on the calendar, and that in 21 days from now, if our girls don't come into season again, we will know that our male was very successful. I'm excited for that part since we just had another cow[Angus] give birth to a calf last Saturday[that has been a bit of a roller coaster]. Regardless, if our dexter bull is successful, we should have calves come 5/31/2025[yes, I already calculated it out..mainly for fun and to test out the gestation calendar to get a feel for it.]

Just because both females are riding each other does not mean both are in heat . May just be one . It's a cow thing to ride the one in heat , and the one in heat to ride another not in heat . Just giving you a heads up . Hope it goes well for you .

As said - ONLY the cow that will STAND STILL while being ridden is actually in heat (ready for breeding). Also, you need to start watching 17 days thru 24 days. 21 days is an AVERAGE. Most of my heifers (15 months old) have a 17 day heat. Older cattle 21 - 24 is more expected.
