I just recently met a man that owns/runs several thousand acres for his beef cattle and when asked how many cattle he has on this large amount of ground I almost fell over , he has a pretty small amount of cattle. How many acres does it take to per cow where you live? I live Northeast corner of Illinois and it takes 1 1/2 to 2 acres per cow/calf. We start feeding big bales in the fall, maybe October or November. Depends how pastures are holdong up and quit feeding big bales middle March early April.

i live in sw Iowa and depending on the land because it varys so much around here but typically bout 2 acres but some ground maybe 3 or more.

In a prior loction it ran 300-350 acres per pair. That was November till March.

Here we will run 1 cow per 3 on a year round basis. If not to much rain and a nice fairly cold winter, and Cattle Annie, CRR and Frenchie and Oldtimer I am talking not much below 40 degrees for the most part, with the ryegrass planted at 1 acre per Cow Calf pair we may not have to feed hardley any hay.
Ya'll can come help me drink some Crown Royal and help the Indians get richer at the Casino.

Sounds like a plan... :D :D :D :D :D however I have a weakness for cold beer.

Our weather runs from the extreme of -45 celsius -to 30 celsius..

We generally have the cows go out on fall rye pasture in mAy, On to native pasture in June till Sept. Then on to Annual rye, fall rye till snowfallin late Oct or Nov.
Then in the yard till May
Some years we get going earlier, also some years have grazed into late Dec.Our carrying capacity is as good as 2 acres to a cow down to 20 acres to a cow in the rougher ground.

On the upside, our summer's are heavenly. I don't know how you folk in the southern climes can handle the heat. See, up here, you can always put on some more layers of clothes to handle the cold... but I figure a person could run out of them pretty quickly down there just trying to survive the heat! ;-)

Take care.

I have always said that I can on enough layers to keep warm but I cannot take off enough layers to keep cool without getting in trouble with the law.

-45 celcius! Thats around -50 farenheit! We do not like gonig outside below +20 farenheit. Anytime water freezes count me out!

  Now don,t be like that....you get used to it.It does make life interesting though. Cows do fine if out of the wind and bedded well in extreme cold. You do have to pay attention to the cows body condition ,as well during cold snaps. And you have to have patience, cause everything takes longer.

and CattleAnnie is right summers are heavenly?

I thought so too. Until many years ago I spent a year in Iceland. You can't put on enough clothing to keep you warm, even if fur is included in the mix. We dressed up till we couldn't move, if we fell down we would have been there a long time till somebody could lift you back to your feet. You know what? We were still cold!
