knots on heifer

We have a heifer, approx. 6 mths old with growths on area around nose, one on left cheek and one on right eye lid. None of our other cows have this. She is a longhorn, if that helps. We at first thought she may have gotten in to some hornets or something but the knots or warts have been on there about a month or month and 1/2. they are not oozing or anything and actually look like warts. Is that what they might be and should we be concerned?

Most likely they are warts. Will eventually run their course and go away. The vet can probaly give her a shot to help them go away but they will most likely appear in some of your other cattle as they are caused by a virus. A home remedy that will save some money is to put the calf in the chute and cut some of the warts off and feed them to the animal. You will probaly have to force feed, I don't think it would be too appetizing. Just use your fingers and push them down the animals throat. If I remember right once the warts run their course, the animal should not get them again.

Definitely would be easier to mix with feed if you can make sure she gets them down. Good idea Gene
