Does anyone have any first hand experiences with kelp meal as a livestock supplement? We hear a lot about it, but can't find any research done on it.

We use it as a trace mineral supplement for our free range layers, our pastured broilers, our beef cattle and our sheep. Once our cattle got used to the taste, they really enjoyed it. We feed it free choice in a mineral/salt feeder. Does it work ? Don't have any objective data, but our cattle look great, breed well, wean beautiful calves.<p>Alison<br>

We hear a lot about it, but can't find any research done on it.<br>Recent issue of Cattle Business in Mississippi has article<br>about research at Mississippi State University's reseach on kelp!<br>Research began in 1996 and is a spray treatment of 3 lbs per acre on fescue<br>twice a year. Virginia also has a current study and the animals from both<br>studies go to Texas for final study or processing. Very expensive for the little bit of iodine your animal will get out of it. There is some research that it will lower rectal temperatures on cattle but seems to be used in more horse feeds to help with heat and lathering. Most feeds and minerals already have supplemental iodine included in the formulation.

That's a pretty big ripoff too for what little your getting. (salt). EDDI is organic as well and dirt cheap. Has more iodine in a teaspoon that these others have in a ton.
