Needs a little feed but that is a hell of improvement. You at least have a chance of getting a decent calf crop out that pallet head Char bull. High yellow and smoky calf's sell good at the barn.

Smoky calves sell well here too.

I like the bull, Buck.

A lot of people round here are putting char. bulls with their angus/brangus cows. They seem to be making out pretty well.

Man, up here smokey color takes you WAY down the pay scale. A friend's cow had a really nice heifer, smokey colored, and when he sold her she brought .85 and our black Angus heifer (both sired by the same bull) of similar weight, frame etc brought $1.09. They got doubly screwed, a heifer AND Grey...

Table 6. The Average Selling Price for Feeder Cattle Based on Calf Color

Average Selling Price (Value/cwt.)

Deviation From Overall Calf Color Average (Value/cwt.)
yellow $96.47 $2.78
yellow-white face $95.65 $1.96
black-white face $95.02 $1.54
white $94.93 $1.24
black $94.29 $0.60
red $92.74 -$0.95
gray $91.85 -$1.84
red-white face $91.81 -$1.88
gray-white face $91.73 -$1.96
spotted or striped $83.84 -$9.85

USDA research from 2003 on selling price of different colored calves. I found it surprising. Hope it's readable. Who would have thought yellow calves are the highest selling in the U.S. ?

I agree with Dana Kopp...if it 'aint black or a baldie you get docked up here.
Dana..you know Bronco Bob Halverson over there in Turah?
He's an old friend.

Hey Mike looks like you need a Hereford Bull to get some of them yeller calves. ;-)

I sure do have some herefords cows but not nearly enough. Those "buckskins" make great momma cows!

EEK! - I lied -- his grey heifer brought .95 - so not quite as bad as my initial price quote but still wasn't even published in the price ranges for heifers in that weight.

Just throwing in a couple more pictures to stir up conversation. The young white bull calf is 7 months old out of a Charolais bull and the black cow on the left in the picture.

You have a little more grass in those pics than in the ealier set with the new bull. Thats good to see. The cows looks good and should cross well to the Char. I would ship those bull calves after Thanksgiving (most barns are closed this week). I may be too old school; but I wean light in a drought because a dry cow needs a lot less groceries than a wet cow.

You are right Brandonm, we probably will sell the calves in the next week or two. Couple that are too young, but there are 3 that can go. The big white bull calf, I'd like to see how he looks at a year or so, but know it will cost to feed him. The grass in this place isn't too bad yet, been getting a little rain there. We have about 38 large round bales there at that place to feed.
