Can anyone give me some info. on getting rid of johnson grass in my hay fields. Every spring when it starts I spray it with roundup and it seems like another patch pops up ten feet away.

Johnsongrass spreads via aggressive rhizomes as well as seeds. Animals grazing JG hay and/or heads in mature grass can spread it in feces.

Unless EVERY JG plant has been killed with herbicide, it will spread. Roundup translocates via leaves & stems to roots. If any given plant is missed, it will continue to spread. The absolutely worst thing to do with JG is to plow it since doing such will only chop up the roots and each nodule will create another plant.

In past I have heard that with a JG infested field, it can take 3 to 5 years of spraying to 99% eradicate it, assuming no seeds have hit the ground.

Hope this helps and good luck!

Don't spray stronger than the label recommends....a slow death is better than a quick burn off.

It is easy to kill. Just pasture it all summer and the cows will keep it eat into the ground and kill it. People around here want it in the hay fields because it is such a high producer and makes such high quality hay and the cows love it. People feed mature johnson grass hay in the hay fields in the winter to try to get a good stand going. However, pasturing it all summer will kill it out because the cows would rather eat it than anything else. Common answer for the question of what do I do about the johnson grass in my hay field? Fertilize it!

Yep. If the cows can get to it, it won't have a chance.

Amen! I actually try to encourage it in my pastures by unrolling hay. I consider it a resource instead of a problem.

If you are using your own hay, don't worry about it. If you are selling hay to horse customers that require clean hay, you either need to use glyphosate (RoundUp or a generic) or a product called Maverick.

As Novatech said you could graze it out. Can't stand to be eaten on every day.

Well it wasn't me that said it but I agree.
By the way, what is wrong with feeding it to horses?

In hay fields you can spray Outrider to kill it. And also a new one called Pastora will work.

Found this in a Texas Hwy Dept. Manuel.
"The recommended herbicides to control Johnson grass and broadleaf weeds, especially bloodweed, ragweed and sunflower, are Roundup Pro + Escort XP + Outrider + Vista. Application rates are Roundup Pro at eight ounces plus Escort XP at 0.5 ounces plus Outrider at 1.33 ounces plus Vista at 10 ounces per acre."

We just wick the JG with a 50% solution of roundup and water. Does a great job and it is cheaper than general spraying. Make your own wick.

I discussed making the wick here about five years ago. See: Scroll the the posts to find. I'm still using this same wick five plus years later. The section of pictures is lost and no longer available.

I thought round up is a kill all non selective killer , how do you spray johnson grass , without killing your hay crop or setting it back ?

He said "wick" not "spray"

I've been to several farm auctions the last few years, where they have sold wick systems that are obsolete since the advent of Roundup Ready crops. At first they went real cheap (less than $100) and then they were almost giving them away. The last sale that I went to they had to put one with a 14ft. brush hog to get rid of it. So if you were looking for one, that would be a place I would look.
