Panama Canal belongs to the Panamans. We built it and they had paid their deeds for the Canal. Carter was right for giving up the Canal. Are you still stuck on the Manifest Destiny way of thinking? British agreed to give up Hong Kong. Now Hong Kong is under independent rule (soon to be ruled under China) and are free to govern for themselves. Panama has proven to run the Canal for themselves (plus they gain extra revenues for themselves since years of poverty needs to be fix). Leave the Panama Canal alone; it is not on our soil therefore it is not ours to keep. If the Panamans said they want the Canal for themselves, give it to them (glad we did give it to them!), its their rights. Don't let your fears get you...racism is part of fear. So is Manifest Destiny is the work of fear.

Take a poll of residents of Hong Kong,see how many are excited about the prospect of living under the rule of a communist thug government that will shoot any citizen who exercised his "freedoms" under independent rule. I am sure they will also enjoy having their businesses taken over by the government. As far as Panama goes the average resident has seen no benefit from our giving up the canal. Many have lost income because of the reduction of American companies employees spending money there.

Jimmy Carter may be the most naive man who ever walked. He coddles and believes whatever Castro, Arafat, and others like that dish out. His latest trip to Cuba is a prime example.
