"Japan Records 18th Case Of BSE

A five-year-old Holstein cow in Sunagawa, Hokkaido, was confirmed Thursday as Japan's 18th BSE case, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare. The Kyodo News reports the cow was born in August 1999, almost two years before Japan's feed ban went into effect in October 2001.

Japan recorded its first case of BSE in September 2001. The country had continued to allow the importation and feeding of ruminant-derived protein to cattle for almost a decade after the U.S., Canada and the United Kingdom imposed their feed bans.
