I was in college in a class with 350 students. The professor stopped class so we could either discuss, leave, or sit there with a shocked face. I stayed. Tragedies like this didn't happen much in those days.
I know I was at the university at that time, but I don't recall whether I was in class or had just walked back to the dorm from class when I found out it blew up.

I was sitting in Mrs. Langston's english class, junior year of high school. We weren't watching it, but when it happened the principal announced it on the intercom.

For the Columbia disaster (2002 or 3?), I was at a 3 day auction in Nacogdoches, TX. We had been camped at a small lake west of town, and were told to leave the next morning. I didn't realize that pieces and parts had fallen around us and the authorities were securing the area.
I was penning cows that morning.
When I got back to the house Mrs. told me it exploded. I said I heard that. I just thought at the time it was one of the military guys playing out of Barksdale. It wasn't uncommon to watch them over Rayburn making practice bombing runs.

I was 29 years old, and was at work on that day. Someone had brought in a little B&W portable TV so we could watch the launch, and we saw the whole thing. Gut punch is right. We couldn't believe what we were seeing.

I was sick as a dog with the flu the day of Challenger disaster. had no idea until a friend from work called .

I was outside watching the Columbia fly over . As I headed back inside, I heard the explosion.

Question in my mind - have we benefitted from the space programs? Has it been a good investment of our money? There sure is some risk. Anyone here interested in going to live on Mars on that first flight?
