I have mini donkeys. Yesterday, we turned a jennet out with our jack. I have only one, so I guess that makes him my herdsire. He's three years old. We got him last year.

Peach, the jennet, is clearly in heat. She's standing there, tail in the air with that "come hither" expression, (or I think that's what it says). They run around, they nibble each other, he mounts, and nothing happens because he either wasnt erect, or he was but then lost it before he mounted, or he missed the "target", or because he just fell off.

Meanwhile, Peach is chasing him around like "hey! Get over here and finish what you started!" This continues on and off all day.

What's up with this? We had some difficulty with him last year, but I think that he was finanny successful in breeding with Sarah. I think. Unless she was bred by Pancho, the jack we sold when we bought Gus. He did get out one day...

It is all pretty comical, but I am starting to worry. I never saw Pancho have this issue. The only way I am going to know if Gus has it in him is if Sarah has a spotted foal. Pancho was grey dun.

Does it take a while for them to figure out what they are supposed to do? He should be sexually mature at three. I understood last year's awkardness, as he was just getting to the age... I need opinions. Help. I want spotted babies.

Is it possible you got a dud?

It does happen.

Time to look for a replacement I think.

Bez?

I guess I will find out in a month or so when Sarah foals. I hate waiting. I had posted this concern last year on a mini donkey forum and was told that it takes a while for them to get the hang of things. I guess I will turn her out a while this morning and see what happens.

Donkey porn. I feel so dirty!!!!

Practice this hippie meditation:

"I do not want my donkey bred. I really don't need any more foals to take care of."

Make an appointment to have him gelded.

If you don't want them they WILL reproduce. If you are trying to raise a lttle money .... well, you know....

Well I separated them this morning. He's back in his pasture, the jennets in their's. It was sort of an accident they were together to start with. There was a gap in the fence. I figured, what the heck, I had two that were ready to breed and I didn't even know if they were in heat. They were! Especially Peach, who tends to be aggressive toward her men! I am going to wait it out to see if anyone turns up preggers or if Sarah has a spotty foal. I have a maiden jennet that I think he might have actually successfully bred.

The folks I bought him from said that if I didn't get results with him I could bring him back. I think I'll just geld him and teach him to pull a little carriage for parades and such. He's a handsome animal, but if he can't perform, he can't be my herdsire.

I keep you posted on this one. The longer Sarah goes, the greater is the possibility that she's got Gus' foal in her. I know that a lot of folks hand breed, but that's a little too up close and personal for me!

Before you geld him or have him grow wheels, I'd have him semen tested. If his semen is good, and he still doesn't know how to do it...well, either he's low on testosterone, "dumb", or his Jennet just doesn't turn him on...lol. Could he be "bi-sexual" or "gay"...??? LOL!

You laugh about him being gay. I thought that was a possibility last year. I had him out in pasture with another of my jennets in season and he was too busy hanging around the fence with the two jack weanlings and gelding. I had to go out there and drive him away from that fence to get him over to that jennie. I was joking then that he was gay.

Is that possible? I have read threads about folks who thought they had a gay bull.
