Is this Udder Edema?

My 8 year old barren beef cow Penelope has an udder issue. I thought it was just a dermatitis problem from her inner thigh rubbing on her udder and making an open would. (Treating that issue still.) But in doing some digging around in her undercarriage, I realized the problem was on the other side of her udder and it seems really swollen. Not red and hot though. Do y'all have any advice for me? I sure hope so!

bottom side udder swellings can be edema, but remember edema is soft, and will "pit" when pressed, also consider tumor, hernia prepubic tendon rupture, infection in quarter, injury, hardware disease, im sure others have additional thoughts.
1) feel of it
2)take her tempeature
3) try to milk it
4) is it sore?

Thank you! My vet is coming on Thursday morning and she thinks summer mastitis. My girl likes to rub her butt on the tree line and she likely got a fly to give her a bacterial mastitis. That kind isn't as dangerous as the regular kind, or so my vet says. I milked it and it was pus like but not stinky. Going to sleep tonight having milked my first cow so there's that! Swelling went a little down but still needs lots more out of there. My vet told me to stop because I was using a lot of pressure and I could bruise her. She is coming to squirt antibiotics up the teet. Large animal vetting is wild! I'm really hoping for none of those on your list!

The vet showed up today and walked me through shooting antibiotics in two of her teets, since I don't have a chute and my cow only likes me sitting that close to her undercarriage. I am feeling very cowgirl today! Hopefully this will solve the swelling issue and then the contact wound from friction that is happening in her inner thigh folds. She also told me that my big girl has lost about 100 lbs and still needs to lose 100 lb more. I'm hopeful my heiferette is on the way back to feeling fine!

She didn't ask for anyone's opinion on what she's good for. Has nothing to do with being "woke", it's about not being an ass to people just for the sake of being an ass.
Yup, I happily own being an ass that embraces reality and speaks the truth of what I think.
Go a little further and I'll tell you what I really think... and you'll like that even less... but it will still be the truth.

Maybe we should make a separate thread for speaking the uncomfortable truths we all recognize but avoid voicing...

She'd make hamburger...
Penelope is living her best life, bringing joy to me everyday, letting me ride her, rolling over and letting me rub her belly. Travlr, other people's cows can be hamburger all day long, mine will stay my sweet friend!

Are you hanging in there with her weight loss plan? Green grass is coming and it will be more fun in the sun.
Yes, today was the first day she has gotten grain since the big diet started. I can't wait for green grass season. It's 30 degrees here in the South, let the spring begin!

The vet said Penelope looked much better than she did when I first got her. The guess is that she's lost about 100 lbs already with 100 to go. Her front half looks good, her butt part is still too big. And maybe she is basing that on the fact that she is a pet and needs to have a different body shape to live a long happy life.

Stay with your plan and remember that fat cows do not do good in hot weather. When she starts picking at green grass cut back on her ''feed'' to compensate. Keep up the good work and enjoy your girls.
