In halter breakingo ur yearling steer, I am trying to introduce yummies as a reward but the numb nut only will eat boring hay (tha's all he had at the other faram fo ra year). He will not eat molasses grain, or cob, or even a nice red apple. Any ideas on getting him to like treats. Oh yeah, Bossy our big pig of a heiffer always buts in and eats what he reuses to.

just hook him to something bigger than he is. pull him a little then stop til he learns to release the pressure on rope then go a little farther. he will soon learn not to fight the rope

It's hard to tell what one will eat if they've never been introduced to it before. Frequently another animal eating something will get it intersted in trying it for the first time. I had a pair of oxen that only liked sugar wafer cookies as treats. Go figure.
You might try giving the grain and no hay till an hour our so after he;s had the grain. If he eats it good, if not wait a little longer. Or you could do like we do with a blockhead bottle calf. Poke the stuff into his mouth.
