Incorporating Stockers- Any advice Welcome!

Help Support CattleToday:

I know that with the rain in California the order buyers have been paying a lot more for light calves. And a young man I know who has a semi has been making regular trips south with light calves. And a local man I know who has pasture leased in CA and Wyo has been shipping light calves nearly weekly. He gets two seasons grazing. Winter/spring in CA and summer in Wyo.

Sold a load of steers today, nothing fancy, cleaned up stags, horns etc. but decent quality. Sept delivery, 850 lbs at $2.65.

I did the value of gain based on last week's market report. It didn't pencil good at all. But them I did based on the future price using LRP. That route came through like gang busters.
Calf market is down here.
Good #500 heifers were U$S 1060 this week.
Good #660 heifers were $ 1200 this week.
So $140/#160 is 88 cents...Hard to make a bundle (stockering) at that VOG.
Seems like stockering worked better before the ethanol mandate.

Have u locked in fall LRP?

I haven't locked in LRP and don't know that I will this year. Every time I look it has gone up. The years to do LRP is on a market that I am worried about a down trend. Or if has been too high for too long.
